The Korean War and the Vietnam War
Lesson Introduction
I will start with short discussion question, “What happened to Germany and Europe after the world war?” Students will reflect on the previous lesson, and come up with a few answers. Desired student responses would be: Division between west and east, many of the old regimes crumbled, and U.S. attempted to contain communism. Then I will explain that U.S. Containment policy was exercised in Asia as well. Then I will make my way into lecturing the Korean War.

Content Delivery
Students will be given a blank sheet of paper. They will be asked to fold it in half (hot dog)—so that the paper will be divided in the middle creating two columns. I will instruct students to title one side Korean War and the other Vietnam War. I will lecture briefly about the causes and effects of the Korean War. Students will be required to identify the cause, style, environment, and consequences of the war.

Student Engagement & Critical Thinking
Students will get into groups of 4. Each group will be asked to read chapters 17 sections two and three on their textbook (The American Vision: Modern Times, Glenco.). I will ask students to find the causes, style, environment, and consequences of the war. They will be required to list those information on the other side of the note listed Vietnam war. However, before I have them start, I will illustrate hints on how to read and locate these information from the reading by doing a read aloud on selected sections on Chapter 17 section 1 of the textbook. I will show that Titles and Bolded words on the textbook usually gives hints to the readers what information it provides. As I read section one, I will highlight what information is considered necessary for this activity. Also, I will hint to the students to assign different sections of the reading to each members of the group to help manage the reading material.
Demonstrated Learning
Once the notes have been completed, each group will be given ven diagrams, one circle of Korean War and another for Vietnam War. Using their notes, each group will attempt to complete their ven diagram by comparing and contrasting the two wars. After about 10-15 min, I will create a Master Diagram on the board. Each group will help me complete this by, contributing information to the master diagram at a time. Good responses will be written on the board on the diagram, while poor responses will be corrected. During this time students will be free to change or add more information on their own group diagram—which will be collected to be graded.
Lesson Closure
For the lesson closure, I will reflect back to the causes and effects of the two wars and their similarities. Then briefly ask a question, “Do you think bipolarity or U.S. containment policy beneficial to Korea and Vietnam?”
